The Best Time to Fly Over Bali

Dry season brings the clearest skies; wet season brings the greenest island. Here is how season and hour shape what you see.

  • Dry season Apr–Oct
  • Wet season Nov–Mar
  • Mornings: clearest air

The Short Answer

Fly between April and October. Bali’s dry season brings little rain, clear skies and gentle breezes — the conditions for sharp views of the volcanoes, rice terraces and coast.

The wet season still flies well. Showers tend to be short and local, mornings often stay clear, and the island is at its greenest.

Season by Season

Bali’s Flying Year

Two seasons, four windows. Each changes the light, the landscape and how far you can see.

  1. Apr – Jun

    Shoulder Season Sweet Spot

The rains have eased and the landscape is still deep green, but the mid-year rush has not arrived. Sunshine, clear air and more choice of flight times.

    • Green terraces under clear skies
    • More flexible flight slots
    • Crisp mornings over the east coast volcanoes
  2. Jul – Sep

    Peak Dry Season

The driest air of the year keeps haze low, so views stretch furthest and the ocean shows its brightest turquoise. Also the busiest months — plan ahead.

    • Longest-range visibility
    • Sharp volcanic relief for photography
    • Highest demand — book early
  3. Nov – Dec

    Early Wet Season

The first rains turn the island fresh green. Showers usually arrive in the afternoon, while mornings often stay clear and calm.

    • Waterfalls running strongly
    • Fewer visitors on the ground
    • Morning flights recommended
  4. Jan – Mar

    Heart of the Wet Season

The wettest stretch and the greenest island: swollen rivers, mist on the volcanic slopes and dramatic cloud around Mount Agung.

    • Most dramatic skies
    • Schedules may shift for weather
    • Best for flexible travellers

Hour by Hour

Morning Clarity or Golden Hour

The hour you fly shapes the picture as much as the month.

Early morning

Cooler air before the heat haze builds — the clearest views of Agung, and on good days Rinjani on Lombok.

Late afternoon

Warm, low light and long shadows. Tanah Lot and the coast glow against the setting sun.

Clarity vs colour

Mornings favour sharp, long-range views; sunset trades a little haze for the richest colour.

Sea & Crowds

Calm Water, Quiet Skies

The season changes the ocean below and the crowds on the ground — both shape a coastal flight.

  • Dry-season seas

Calmer, clearer water shows reefs and surf breaks around Nusa Penida in sharp detail.

  • Wet-season coast

Choppier seas and big waves breaking on the cliffs — less clarity, more drama.

  • Crowds

July and August are busiest on the ground and in the booking diary; November to March is quieter and more flexible.

Timing Questions

When Should I Fly?

Quick answers on seasons, hours and planning.

Ask Our Concierge Mon–Sat · 08:00–17:00 WITA
Which months are best?

April to October, the dry season. April–June balances clear weather with fewer visitors; July–September brings the clearest skies and the highest demand.

Can I fly in the wet season?

Yes. Showers are usually short and local, mornings are often clear, and the terraces and waterfalls are at their most vivid. Keep a little flexibility in your dates.

Morning or sunset?

Morning for crisp, long-range clarity; late afternoon for warm colour and long shadows. Both suit a 30 or 60-minute flight.

How far ahead should I book?

At least 48 hours ahead. For July and August, or a sunset slot, book earlier to secure your preferred time.

Do festivals affect flights?

Nyepi, the Day of Silence, stops all flights. Around Galungan and Kuningan, villages line their streets with tall decorated penjor — a striking sight from above.
